Boycott Benetton - No RFID tracking chips in clothing!

Benetton was considering putting RFID tracking chips in their clothing that can be read from a distance and used to monitor the people wearing them.

What is RFID?

Radio Frequency ID chips embedded in clothing to track inventory. These tiny tags, predicted by some to cost less than 1 cent each by 2004, are "somewhere between the size of a grain of sand and a speck of dust." They are to be built directly into food, clothes, drugs, or auto-parts during the manufacturing process. Did you know they remain active after you leave the store?

Q: Why was Benetton doing this?
A: For inventory control efficiency. The tags can be read from a distance.

Q: Can't the tags be disabled?
A: No. They can be "put to sleep", but anyone with the correct equipment can wake them up at any time.

Q: Why should I worry about that?
A: These tags are being put in a variety of products, not just clothes. In the future, it may be impossible to go anywhere without a complete history of your travels being recorded by RFID tag readers.

Q: Isn't that just science fiction?
A: No. The technology may not be in use for that purpose today, but it will support such tracking in the future.
